Each piece of sea glass started out as a glass object. Overturned time and time again it has traveled its own journey where the waters have shaped, defined and made each piece one-of-a-kind, before coming to rest along the shore.
The glass has an organic feel in nature that inspires me to use it as a creative medium for jewelry and lampshades.
I am self-taught artisan inspired by the nature that surrounds me. I began by making jewelry with perfectly tumbled pieces of found sea glass and wrapping them with silver wire. The idea of creating mosaic lampshades came to me as a way to illuminate the large and gnarly pieces of found sea glass.
Searching for antique lamp bases that are interesting and unique, as well as creating lamp bases from organic materials, are the inspiration for my lampshades. I then carefully choose from the various colors, shapes and sizes of sea glass that convey to me an image of how the final shade will appear and compliment the lamp base.
Each piece of sea glass is wrapped with copper foil and soldered. The shade is then pieced together in a free-form manner. A patina is applied to give every lampshade an exceptional style all its own. When the lampshade is coupled with the base a unique work of art is manifested as an extension of myself from my love for creating, decorating, exploring, treasure hunting and adventure. Individually the lamps convey a spirit and presence that cannot be duplicated. When the lamps are illuminated they come alive with vibrant detail through each individual piece of glass.
Any flaws in the sea glass are natural due to nature and tumbling of the sea allowing the shade to take on its own personal character.
