Greg Smith

colored pencil, watercolor, oils, acrylics, pastels, pen and ink, digital art

An award-winning artist born in Sydney and now based in Florida, Greg Smith is known for his finely detailed colored-pencil portraits that capture the character and quiet strength of Australia’s people and their stories.

Greg Smith was born in Sydney, Australia, in 1948, and in 1999, he crossed the Pacific to make his home in the United States. Today, he lives and works in Florida, but his heart is never far from the sunburnt land of his youth.

Greg’s art offers a different lens on Australia. While many artists capture its sweeping coastlines and iconic landscapes, Greg is drawn to its people—the weathered stockmen, the farmers with suntanned skin and hands roughened by the earth, the quiet resilience etched into every crease of their faces. To Greg, these men and women are the soul of Australia, their eyes carrying the untold histories of towns, outback stations, and the wide, open bush.

Art has been Greg’s constant companion since the moment he could hold a pencil. Over the decades, he has mastered a range of media—oils, acrylics, pastels, watercolor, pen and ink, digital art—but colored pencils remain his favorite for their precision and richness. His work is known for its meticulous attention to detail and for capturing not just a likeness, but the living essence of his subjects. Whether it’s a beloved pet or a treasured family member, Greg approaches each portrait as a collaboration, creating timeless keepsakes with the highest quality materials.

In a career spanning more than 50 years, Greg’s art has earned awards and commendations across Australia and the United States, and today his work can be found in collections from England to Europe to his homeland.

Now, in a reflective chapter of life, Greg finds himself returning—if not in body, then in spirit—to the people and places that shaped him. His latest works seek to honor the Australia he knows best: not just the land, but the faces and stories of those who call it home, past and present.
