Ruth Snider
St. Augustine, FL
Ornaments, Decorative

What began as one Santa-shaped shell found on the beach has become a beloved collection of joyful, hand-painted ornaments that bring smiles—and healing—with every brushstroke.
Originally from Ocala, Florida, Ruth Snider has called St. Augustine home since 1997, drawn by her love of the ocean, community, and charm of the nation's oldest city. Her journey into art began unexpectedly in 2007 when she spotted an oyster shell on the beach that looked uncannily like Santa Claus. Intrigued and inspired, she took it home and painted it—unwittingly launching what would become a deeply meaningful artistic path.
Ruth’s creations, known as Josieshells by Ruth, are cheerful, one-of-a-kind ornaments painted on natural seashells she collects herself. Each piece is imbued with personality and warmth, often drawing smiles and delight from viewers. But behind every shell is a story of love and remembrance.
Ruth began painting as a way to cope with the heartbreaking loss of her daughter Josie in 2005. What started as a personal healing process slowly evolved into a mission to share joy with others. Naming her collection in Josie’s honor, Ruth continues to paint with the goal of spreading light—turning grief into grace, and beachcombing into a spiritual practice.
A beloved member of the High Tide Gallery since its early days under original owner Aimee Cebulski, Ruth values the connection her work brings. Though she’s never sought awards or exhibitions, the heartfelt reactions of those who encounter her ornaments are all the recognition she needs.
Whether it’s a Santa, mermaid, angel, or something entirely whimsical, each Josieshell is a labor of love—crafted by hand, touched by memory, and gifted with joy.
